Chapter 13

I stepped anxiously out of the cave into the unnatural, Hellish stillness.

I expected that they would already be tearing each other apart, but instead there was an eerie quiet. Once we were in view of the red sky Vanoriel took the lead, urging me to walk along the rocks and keep a low profile.

For a moment I thought the Prideish soldiers had abandoned us. I saw the glint of a blade amid the rocks and realized their uniforms had shifted color to match the landscape. Neat. I did not see the angels.

“Where are they?” I whispered.

Vanoriel squeezed my arm, putting a finger to his lips. He spoke quietly.

“Don’t whisper, just speak very quietly,” he said. “Whispers carry farther.”

He pointed. I had to squint, but in the sky I saw a white mote very far off. I remembered reading about a species of moth whose wings varied from near-white to dark, the latter having become more prevalent after their tree-roosts became saturated with soot. Angels were not well suited to patrolling in Hell, unlike the camouflaged warriors who had melted into the rocks around us.

They did not belong here.

“Have they seen us?” I asked, mimicking Van’s low pitched voice.

“You both stand out against the rock,” a woman purred. “Particularly you, kneeler.”

I flinched. I had not noticed Andrala right next to me.

“Forgot to pack my sneak-around clothes,” I shot back. “What’s the plan?”

She looked past me and made a series of hand gestures I took to be signals for her troop, ending with a closed fist punching the sky. Then she answered.

“We seem to have even numbers, so we have the upper hand. If we fight in the sky it might attract more, however.”

“Why don’t you just open a gate?” I asked. “We can go right to the Watch, can’t we?”

She shook her head. Van answered.

“That kind of magic is easy to detect,” he said.

“How do you think we found you?” she asked. “Now, quiet.”

She made another signal. A few seconds later I saw a shape erupt from the ground and go soaring through the air, bat wings beating furiously. White motes I hadn’t noticed before suddenly became obvious as frantic angels responded, at least a dozen taking off after the lone soldier. A distraction.

Once they had gone a ways on Andrala nodded and we began to move. I wondered about the lone warrior and whether they’d be able to make it on their own, but if Andrala was worried she did not show it. Her spectacular uniform had muddied to the color of dark hellstone, and despite the nearness it was easy to lose her against the rock. It occurred to me she’d had a very long time to get good at this.

I wondered what foes she had fought these last centuries, given the Pact.

Vanoriel kept close to me, nervously scanning the sky for his own kind. Andrala was right; with his white clothes and marble features he was a beacon for anyone soaring overhead. I wished I had a
